Homecoming 2020

By: Shaherzad Chawdree

From November 16th-20th, the Shorecrest Upper School celebrated Homecoming Week!

In full glamor and bling, the high school took on Movie Star Monday. Boas, jewelry, and wigs were worn by Seniors dressed as your favorite celebrities. Notable costumes include Kyle C’s Joe Exotic and Brenna D’s Anna Wintour. During break, these dazzling celebrities walked the red carpet placed by the Student Council on the deck. After their names were announced, they strutted the carpet while students dressed up as paparazzi took their pictures. Freshmen similarly dressed as photographers and sported their flashiest cameras. Among the Sophomores and Juniors, there were students dressed as iconic characters from your favorite movies like Power Rangers, The Matrix, and The Incredibles!

Tuesday was competitive and fierce with Rivalry Tuesday. Students dressed up as famous rivals throughout history and fiction. Taking on one of the most popular video games in the world, the Freshmen dressed up as angry birds and bad piggies from the Angry Birds series. The Sophomores, sporting their toughest leather jackets and most tubular Hawaiian shirts, dressed as bikers and surfers. Waving their wands and casting complicated spells, the Juniors dressed up as wizards and Death Eaters from Harry Potter. Their long robes and Hogwarts house ties were enough to make it seem like they just walked off set. However, my personal favorite was the Seniors’ country vs. country club theme. Dominating one side of the deck, half of the grade wore their best tennis skirts and polo shirts with golf clubs in hand. The other half had long brown boots, bright cowboy hats, and flannel shirts. They square-danced on the deck as country music played over the speakers.

Although, nothing could compare to Wednesday: Generation Day. Each grade dressed up as a separate age group. The Freshmen dressed up as babies, wearing onesies and holding stuffed animals. I was almost tempted to bring them to the Experiential School and do arts and crafts with them! The Sophomores dressed as kids, specifically middle schoolers. Donning their old Shorecrest uniforms, they gave the Upper School a blast from the past. The Juniors dressed as your favorite soccer moms and Hawaiian-shirt wearing dads. On the deck, the Seniors played bingo as senior citizens. Many put baby powder in their hair or wore gray wigs to achieve their best silver fox look. Popular items of clothing included robes, sweater vests, and vintage glasses. However, their props proved to be the most impressive. They shuffled along with canes across the deck, some even bringing walkers they borrowed from their families. Connor C. rolled on campus with his electric scooter, and Shannon R. embraced her inner Stevie Nicks and brought an acoustic guitar.

Despite strict COVID regulations, the upper school was able to successfully have Class Color Competition Day. Starting out the day, each grade played Slip and Slide Football on the field. Despite being spaced out on the field, we managed to cheer our teams on with brightly colored signs and flags. The Juniors ended up winning the game with the Sophomores placing second. It was clear by their soaked shirts and soapy faces that they tried their best to win the game. In Powderpuff Football, the Freshmen surprisingly placed first with the Seniors placing second, winning their first ever football match. Our brightest scholars competed in Brain Bowl, answering questions relating to College Mascots, famous singers, and video games. The Seniors ended up placing first with the Juniors placing second. Following the theme of the Oscars, each grade decorated a banner representing their class. The Sophomores stole the show with their uniquely crafted banner.

On Friday, instead of having a pep rally, students gathered on the bleachers to watch the Homecoming crowning ceremony. Students voted Julia C, Samia H, Georgia O, Nadya D, and Ella H. as nominees for Homecoming Queen. For Mr. Spirit, Leddon Z, Roderick C, Tyler D, Anthony V, and Kyle C. were nominated. Last year’s Mr. Spirit and Homecoming Queen made an appearance to crown Samia H. and Roderick C. as this year’s winners.

I would like to thank the Student Council and the Shorecrest Faculty for arranging this year’s Homecoming. While it has been difficult to deal with current circumstances, they still managed to make the class of 2021’s last Homecoming one of their best.
