After almost two decades of teaching in the classroom, Upper School Math Teacher Sarah Anderson will transition to the Admissions and Enrollment Office at the start of the second semester.
After it was offered to faculty and staff earlier this fall, Anderson applied for the position. She feels the role would be a step in the right direction career-wise, giving her a chance to support students and families in a new way.
“It was something that matched my skill set, and it also seemed like something that I’d be interested in learning more about,” Anderson said.
She knew the position would begin in January — meaning that she would have to leave the classroom in the middle of the year. “Obviously, it’s not ideal,” Anderson said. “When we started the school year, I planned to remain as a teacher full-time for the whole school year, but it’s one of those opportunities that came up after the school year started, and I didn’t want to pass it up even though the timing was not ideal.”
The position opened after Richard Cameron, who previously served as Associate Director of Enrollment Management, moved to the Athletics Department at the start of this school year. Cameron now serves as Associate Director of Athletics, helping oversee athletic programs and student-athlete development.
Anderson first joined the Shorecrest community in 2007, teaching Algebra I in the Middle School before moving to the Upper School, where she also coached volleyball. After ten years on faculty, she left in 2017 to spend more time with her family, but stayed connected to the Chargers. She then taught math at Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa for six years before returning to Shorecrest in 2023.
“I always kind of had my eye on jobs here, even though Berkeley was a great school to teach at as well,” Anderson said. “I was glad to come back and kind of reconnect with folks here at Shorecrest.”
She holds a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University in Mathematics Education and a Master of Education in Instructional Technology from the University of South Florida.
Anderson will continue teaching AP Precalculus in the spring semester and will remain the adviser for her senior advisory group until graduation. Upper School administrators are currently working to find a replacement for Anderson’s classes for the remainder of the school year.
Although Anderson will move into a new role, teaching may still be part of her future at Shorecrest. Administrators are allowed to teach one course in addition to their primary responsibilities, and Anderson said she has not yet decided whether she will take on a math class next year.
“I’m really looking forward to having an impact on the school in a different capacity,” Anderson said. “I think in admissions, you kind of have the opportunity to meet people on the front end when they’re first deciding to join the community.”
