For the past six years, the varsity girls golf team has been a staple of Shorecrest Athletics. The 2023 team members, headed by Mia Lee ‘24, junior Sophia Dyer, sophomore Diana Muzzarelli, and sophomore Sofia Lee, brought the team huge successes in recent years. The team also competed in regional and district championships and placed in both competitions.

However, the dominance of the girls golf team could be coming to an end this year, as two of the team’s marquee players have opted to sit out this season. Dyer, the 2024 Women’s Amateur champion, has reluctantly chosen not to play for a number of reasons. “I really wanted to play [Shorecrest] golf,” said Dyer. “But I have college recruiting for golf that involves a lot of missed school, as well as independent tournaments that involve a lot of missed school. Missing even more school would not be the best decision for me and for my academic and golf career.”

Although Dyer is sitting out this season, she also made sure to mention that she would love to compete on the Shorecrest team during her senior year.

Muzzarelli also opted to sit out this season, citing more structured practice, school absence, and academic stress as the most prominent reasons she chose not to participate. As a state championship experienced golfer, she was an integral part of the team in past years. Muzzarelli also added she might return next year, and is still playing gold out of school this year.

All hope is not lost, however, as another state championship experienced player, Sofia Lee, has chosen to continue playing and pushing the girls’ golf team forward. Lee said, “I really want to show colleges in the future how committed and dedicated I am to this sport, and I just really enjoy playing. The team gets to practice on one of the nicest courses around, the Vinoy, and meeting new people is always fun.”

Moreover, eighth grader Isabel Loi has joined the team. Loi and Lee will lead the team this year through many matches, and they hope to take themselves to the state championship.

The Shorecrest girls’ golf team is saddened to lose some of their most integral members, but they have made sure to not let this dim their competitive spirit as they continue to put their best foot forward in every match at the direction of Coach Lynette Asad. Former Girls golf coach Daniel Asad mentioned that he was “Sad to see them go.”
