“Never Back Down” by Tom Petty rang resoundingly throughout the expansive walls of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium during junior Sophia Dyer’s visit to the University of Florida (UF). Thousands of students and alumni sang while doing the signature Gator Chomp alongside the University’s newest athletic commit.

These fans travel far and wide to watch the world-famous Florida Gators dominate on the gridiron. Although the school is known for its prowess on the football field, Gators athletics boasts a variety of successful sports teams, including their women’s golf team, which Dyer will join in 2026.

The two-time national women’s golf champions have an impressive multi-million dollar practice facility, which felt like the perfect fit for Dyer. “It was incredible. It is the best I’ve ever seen, [and] it will be the best in the country by the fall of 2026,” Dyer said.

Dyer might’ve chosen to commit to UF, but other impressive schools, such as Vanderbilt and Auburn, were also eager to have her.

Dyer recalled one night in June when schools were first allowed to speak to her. “I was playing in a tournament that day.  It was really nice to see all the work really paid off.  I had such an incredible opportunity,” she said.

Dyer said the commitment process was “really fun and a great learning experience about yourself, and it was really good practice making major decisions.”

While eager to improve her skills, Dyer’s friends are extremely proud of what she has already accomplished. Junior Alex Lewis said, “I’m beyond proud of Sophia. The amount of work and effort she puts in is extraordinary, and it has paid off in the 17 years that I have known her. UF will be lucky to have her.”

This commitment is well-deserved, as Dyer won the Florida State Amateur championship earlier in the year. Dyer has also competed in other championships to boost her global rankings.

Although the championship match was difficult, she persevered to cement herself as one of the best in Florida, making the commitment a certainty. Hopefully, this exciting opportunity will lead her to the LPGA and secure her place alongside the greats of women’s golf.

When asked about her decision, Dyer said, “Heck yes, I’m excited to be a Gator.”
