Leopard print, camouflage, ballet flats, jorts, Adidas Sambas, cherry red, and bows: all staple trends over the past year. But 2024 is over, and with a new year comes new trends.
These trends may seem to have come out of the blue, but fashion forecasting predictions are just the opposite. They derive from search data, consumer shopping habits, and runway shows.
Fashion trends can also resurface from several decades ago, meaning they will come back with a modernized twist. From runway to high street to high school, here is what The Chronicle predicts you’ll see in the hallways in 2025.
- Boho Chic:
The Boho style was popularized during the hippie movement in the 1960s and 1970s. It embraces natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and lace and focuses on textures like embroidery, fringe, and patchwork.
In 2005, the Bohemian aesthetic was revamped as “Boho Chic,” more polished, elevated, and stylish than the original approach. This resurfaced in 2015 thanks to Coachella.
This style is minimalistic and high-end, using fabrics like silk and velvet. It incorporates flowy silhouettes, muted colors, loose statement belts, and lengthy jewelry.
Boho Chic is already being noticed on the runway in Miu Miu’s Salt Looks Like Sugar spring-summer 2025 collection and Louis Vuitton Women’s spring-summer 2025 collection. Miu Miu’s designs have components of boho such as lax statement belts and floral embroideries/patterns.
Louis Vuitton’s collection also features boho chic elements, with models sporting shaggy white ruffles and long, stacked necklaces. Another example of Boho Chic on the runway is The Row’s S/S 25 collection which shows off flowy white pants and shaggy white skirts.
The designer that has impacted the resurgence of Boho Chic the most is Chemena Kamali’s Chloé. The Chloé Summer 2025 collection is nothing but boho. From muted colors to airy white shirts, this collection is the definition of Boho Chic.
- Suede
Mostly used for bags, shoes, and jackets, suede is a type of leather with a velvety finish. Thanks to the forecasted boho resurgence, suede is set to increase as a favored fashion staple.
Suede and boho go hand-in-hand in the fashion industry. Influential celebrities like Bella Hadid and Lily-Rose Depp have recently been spotted wearing suede boots and jackets.
Some models at Miu Miu’s S/S 2025 runway show were noticed wearing suede jackets and skirts. According to Vogue, internet searches for suede in the past month have increased by 263%. In particular, the suede bag has the interest of many as the searches have grown by 175% in the past month. Prada suede bags are especially trending, with searches rising by 281%.
- The Fishermen Aesthetic
If there is anything that says “fashionable fisherman,” it’s Cablenet sweaters, fish-themed bags, fisherman sandals, red and blue stripes, fish-related prints, and raincoats. According to Pinterest Predicts, each of those clothing items has increased in search records on the Pinterest platform.
Cable knit sweaters have especially caught people’s attention, trending by 110%. In Prada’s Spring/Summer Women’s Wear 2025 Show, cable knit sweaters, navy blue, red, flap pockets, and horizontal stripes have all been spotted on their runway.
- Retro Sportswear
In almost every decade, a different nationwide sport or activity turns people crazy. In the 60s, it was biking, 70s jogging, 80s aerobics, and 90s yoga. In the 2020s, everyone is picking up athletic activities for hobbies such as pickleball, beginner ballet classes, and Pilates. In recent years, athletic wear like jerseys, sports bras, and yoga pants have transitioned from athletic to casual wear, perfect for daily errands.
These athletic activities are rooted in teams or socialization, which causes people to dress for the occasion. Sporty outfits will soon bleed into the mainstream. This means track pants, sporty jackets, ballet-like attire, basketball shorts, and athletic but fashionable sneakers could be in style.
Dior’s Spring-Summer Ready-To-Wear Show was inspired by “Sporty Poetry” and was described as a way for functionality to meet elegance in accessories. The collection showcases items inspired by ballet-like leotards and legwarmers. Dior also had pieces that resembled vintage racing jackets.
On the Vivienne Westwood Spring-Summer 2025 Catwalk, Basketball seemingly inspired some designs. One model even carried a basketball onto the runway. Vivienne Westwood featured swimwear, with models wearing bathing suit bottoms and towels.
- Edgy Office Wear
Due to Gen Z boycotting overconsumption, they likely want pieces in their wardrobe to be multipurpose. This leads to those in the workforce wanting to wear their work clothes on the streets. Edgy office wear is a mismatch between personal style and business attire.
An example would be a combination of streetwear and office wear. At Loewe’s SS25 Women’s Fashion Show, some models strutted the runway in style with oversized blazers worn as a shirt and baggy casual pants.
Bottega Veneta is another brand whose Summer ‘25 collection creatively twists workforce fashion. Most designs feature asymmetry, innocent colors, and cartoonish oversized suits.
- Forever Fringe
Freedom of movement was a key aspect of fashion in the Roaring 20s. This was showcased in the infamous flapper dress, dripping with the glamorous fringe.
Fringe came back in the 1960s and 1970s because of the countercultural movement that Native American and African styles inspired. While fringe in the ’60s and ’70s was mostly made of suede, we now see it in all different textures and colors.
Fringe will be used to add not just texture but drama. What is making fringe resurface is what is on the runway. Micheal Kors’s Spring/Summer 25 collection used raffia fringe on skirts and bags.
- Metal “Armor”
We have brought back almost every decade from the 19th century, so do we now need inspiration from the 14th century? Chappel Roan, Zendaya, and Natalie Portman all have recently been seen in metal or medieval-inspired looks.
Fans often look to celebrities for fashion inspiration, so it makes sense that metal and medieval elements will move from the red carpet to retail stores. Of course, those in the spotlight aren’t the only ones who will influence this up-and-coming trend.
Marknull, a designer brand, is a prime example of “armor wear” on the catwalk. Their Spring 2025 Collection showcases models decked out with shields and swords, wearing pieces inspired by the “night and shining armor” trope.
Remember, individual style is what makes each of us unique and admirable. Feel no need to clean out your wardrobe to stay on trend. If one of these predictions piques your interest, remember the item can always be found sustainably at your local thrift store.
