The music industry’s biggest night has come and gone, leaving behind smiling winners, sore losers, and plenty of controversy. The 67th Annual Grammy Awards took place on February 2, 2025, in downtown Los Angeles, celebrating the year’s biggest artists, but not without its fair share of shocks and snubs.
From celebrities getting kicked out to outraged Billie Eilish fans, the night proved to be anything but predictable. Here’s a breakdown of the biggest wins, saddest losses, and the moments that everyone’s been talking about.
Here’s a list of the major award winners:
- Album of the Year: Cowboy Carter – Beyoncé
- Best Country Album: Cowboy Carter – Beyoncé
- Best Rap Album: Alligator Bites Never Heal – Doechii
- Best Pop Vocal Album: Short n’ Sweet – Sabrina Carpenter
- Best Latin Pop Album: Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran – Shakira
- Record of the Year: “Not Like Us” – Kendrick Lamar
- Song of the Year: “Not Like Us” – Kendrick Lamar
- Best Pop Duo/Group Performance: “Die with a Smile” – Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars
- Best Pop Solo Performance: “Espresso” – Sabrina Carpenter
- Best New Artist: Chappell Roan
While some wins were celebrated, others left jaws on the floor in disbelief. One of the biggest shocks of the night was when fan-favorite Billie Eilish went home teary-eyed and empty-handed.
Kendrick Lamar took the Song of the Year award over Eilish, a decision that some students felt was undeserved. “Billie Eilish got nominated for seven Grammys. Seven. And lost every single one,” said freshman Maya Mansour-Barillas, a big Eilish fan. “I think [Lamar] is a talented artist, but I don’t know if he deserved [those] wins.”
Another major shock came from Album of the Year, as Beyoncé took the win over Eilish, a result that also didn’t sit too well with some fans. “Billie was robbed,” said Mansour. “[Hit Me Hard and Soft] was the first album she actually was proud of, and I just think Beyoncé’s album doesn’t deserve the hype.”
Some fans are even going as far as to say that the Grammys were rigged, with claims circulating TikTok that Beyoncé “bought her win.”
“I genuinely think it’s true because the whole situation just seems off,” said Mansour. “My gut is telling me that [Beyoncé and Jay Z] paid for it, because one, they have the money, and two, they just seem kind of shady like that.”
Whether these claims are true or not, the awards left plenty of people asking: did the Grammys get it right?
Yet, the award winners weren’t the only controversial choices from the night. While the Grammys are known for bold fashion moves, Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori may have crossed the line. Reports say the couple left the ceremony early after Censori arrived in a sheer dress that left nothing to the imagination.
Censori, who gained attention for her unrestrained fashion choices in the past, showed up almost completely nude, sparking immense backlash. Though the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) didn’t charge her with indecent exposure, some argued that she should’ve been.
“That whole thing was just so inappropriate … no matter where you are,” Mansour said. The Grammys may be a stage for artistic expression, but this incident raised questions about whether the show should establish stricter dress code policies.
Amid the night’s chaos, singer and Best New Artist winner Chappell Roan chose to use her acceptance speech to call out record labels, urging them to provide better healthcare and livable wages for developing artists.
“Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection,” Roan said. “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” Her speech earned loud applause from the audience, and many praised her online for using the Grammys stage to advocate for change in the music industry.
However, people on TikTok were quick to comment, saying, “After this, she probably went back to her mansion,” and, “Her ego has skyrocketed.” Mansour said, “I think Chappell Roan doesn’t know the time and place to say things. You just won an award; you should be saying thank you and being grateful, not complaining about record labels.”
No matter where you stand, there’s no doubt that winning Best New Artist was a huge moment for Roan.
Overall, the 2025 Grammys delivered exactly what we have come to expect from them: memorable performances, startling wins, and exciting debates. Whether you’re riding high on your favorite artist’s victory or still angry over a total snub, one thing is certain: the conversation surrounding this year’s awards is far from over.

I’d love to hear more commentary on the racism and bigotry a lot of people are displaying as a reaction to Beyoncé’s win — especially since country music has many roots in African-American artists and culture, and she’s the first Black woman to win Best Country Album. Something worth touching on.

Lainey Wilson losing to Beyoncé is foul. That’s one of the best female country albums I’ve ever heard, and it felt “country” unlike Cowboy Carter. Post Malone made it work with F-1 Trillion, but Cowboy Carter is overrated.

What a fabulous piece of literature!
