This letter is in response to: Editorial: School Shootings Are Impacting Teachers
Dear Chronicle Gods,
I just read and really appreciate the “Editorial: School Shootings Are Impacting Teachers.” I think that it is so great you guys were able to legitimately, seriously, and formally address the weirdly taboo subject of talking about school shootings and gun control.
This is something that I think about quite often, as in Mr. Seymours class, funnily enough, my “This I Believe Speech” was on this topic. I fully understand if you guys believe you have already written too much, addressed shootings enough/isn’t related, but for me (if you didn’t know, I’m Australian:) the recent shooting at Bondi Beach is something that reminded me of the gun violence all around the world. The days following served as a stark contrast for me between Australia and the U.S. The Australian government immediately worked on implementing stricter gun laws, whereas here there seems to just be condolences, and in my mind, condolences aren’t going to save anyone’s life.
If you guys decide this is something to write about, great. If not, to be honest, this email serves more as appreciation to all of you for seriously thinking about and being willing to write that statement when there are so few people who seem willing to talk about it.
Thank you,
Charlie Cowan
