From providing a quiet study place to aiding students emotionally, Upper School Learning Specialist Dr. Jennifer Hart seems to constantly work on improving students’ well-being. While one might think that teaching a subject in a classroom is the way to get through to students at a school, Dr. Hart does it with just a simple conversation during breaks and students’ free periods.
She has a close relationship with many students, with the vast majority being seniors who use her room regularly. This room, located in downstairs Landy Hall, is referred to as the “learning lounge.”
“I support students’ learning process and learning access, providing coaching, learning resources and peer tutoring. I also promote research-based teaching and learning strategies and coordinate the learning lounge, but my main role is in academic wellness,” Dr. Hart said.
“Dr. Hart provides this space that is just the best, and I come here every single day,” senior Betty Li said. “Her space is quiet but welcoming. I can get my work done whenever I need to.”
Dr. Hart connects well with students due to her understanding of what they experience. She has two kids who graduated from Shorecrest in the past three years.
“This makes me understand the circumstances here and the parents better as well. I’m better equipped to support students and parents because my own children have gone here,” Dr. Hart said.
Outside of Shorecrest, Dr. Hart coordinates Weedon Island Preserve parkrun, a weekly 5k. She and her husband Tim act as event directors, and several Upper School students volunteer at the event every Saturday.
Parkrun has existed for 22 years and now holds weekly events all around the world.
On campus, Dr. Hart feels passionate about seeing students progress throughout high school.
Dr. Hart’s personal connections with students help create a safe space for students, reducing their academic anxiety.
“I feel like she creates a great community,” senior Nicholas Canizares said. “Everyone is stressed over work and other responsibilities, and she’s a nice person to talk to, a break from all that stress.”

Normally, Brummett plays defense, but when starting goalie sophomore Kurt Schratweiser missed a match due to illness, Brummett was thrust into the role. “[Brummett] did a great job, especially considering he hadn’t played the position in so long,” Head Coach Casey McDonough said.](https://spschronicle.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image2-1200x800.jpg)
