Across all levels at Shorecrest, more and more students are enrolling in online classes. These courses include advanced-level subjects such as Multivariable Calculus and AP Physics C: Electricity and Mechanics, as well as FLVS Driver’s Ed, which freshmen can also take.
Most students take online classes simply because they’re not offered at Shorecrest. These classes are generally self-paced, but assignments still have deadlines. These deadlines keep students on track with in-person learning while also allowing them some flexibility.

“I think it brings the benefit of having more options for students. I don’t know if there’s much of a negative impact in our community other than just bringing the benefit of students to have [more] options,” Assistant Director of College Counseling Aidan Steinly said.
Director of Online Learning Christopher Powers started Shorecrest’s online community in 2011 when he was a college counselor.
“It’s really just the 10th and 11th and 12th graders. [..] It’s actually almost 20% of the Upper School that is enrolled,” Powers said.
Initially, Powers worked to find flexibility for students who needed to take online courses for medical reasons, partnering with different programs like Johns Hopkins, Northwestern Center for Talent and many other groups. Now, students can enroll in classes from a variety of providers each year, like One Schoolhouse, Florida Virtual School and Constellation Learning.
“I think the time management aspect of it, and, just the flexibility […] some people find it more helpful for learning just because they learn better individually,” senior Leilani MacIntyre said.
MacIntyre added that online learning helps her time management skills continue to grow, and it also allows more free time to do in-school work.
“The opportunities in online classes are sort of unending. If you can think of a course, we can probably find something in it. It’s really exciting,” Powers said.

Normally, Brummett plays defense, but when starting goalie sophomore Kurt Schratweiser missed a match due to illness, Brummett was thrust into the role. “[Brummett] did a great job, especially considering he hadn’t played the position in so long,” Head Coach Casey McDonough said.](https://spschronicle.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image2-1200x800.jpg)

Online learning is definitely another way to grow time management skills and to augment the opportunities provided at Shorecrest. Great article, Faylynn.
