Not many people can say they’ve written two bestselling books, delivered over 700 speeches across three continents, collected thousands of bags of litter and changed someone’s life with a taco. Yet, these feats were all accomplished by one person: author and motivational speaker Sam Demma.
Known for his humorous and memorable advice such as “be someone’s taco” and “empty your backpack,” Demma first spoke to Shorecrest last November. Aided by his signature comically large red backpack, he encouraged students to let go of what weighs them down and taught them how small, consistent actions can foster enormous change.
He will be returning this spring to offer students newfound wisdom that builds upon his previous performance.
“This presentation builds on my last visit, but it’s shaped by new stories, fresh reflections and content from my upcoming book ‘Return on Goodwill,’ which argues that there is a return we get in life when we choose to be good people,” Demma said. “It leans more into practical takeaways and self-reflection, while still keeping the energy, humor and honesty that students connected with last time.”
Last year, Demma’s speech made an impact on students and staff alike.
Junior Yousef Mansour-Barillas agreed. “I honestly had no idea that he was coming back, but I’m really excited that he is,” he said. “I think we, as a school, really enjoyed his speech, and his return also shows that we made an impression on him.”
US Head Dean and 12th Grade Dean Stacy Alexander arranged Demma’s original visit and is overseeing his return.
“I was really, really blown away by the receptiveness of the students,” Alexander said. “Sam has a really good way of weaving in humor with his message, and I think that resonated with them.”
If there’s one thing Demma hopes listeners take away from his speeches, it’s this: “Small choices matter more than people often realize.”
“The way you treat others in everyday moments, the way you speak to yourself when things don’t go as planned and the effort you give when no one is watching all quietly shape who you become over time. These moments don’t always get attention, but they add up in powerful ways,” Demma said. “Even small actions can change the way someone feels, including yourself, and those choices can ripple further than you ever expect.”
Through his next speech, Demma aims to empower the Shorecrest community, foster compassion and reinstill the impact each person can have on themselves and their peers — one step, one backpack, one taco at a time.
